Made in China

MADE IN CHINA was filmed in Manzhouli, a border city in Inner Mongolia on the Chinese-Russian frontier and a key node of the New Silk Road. In the 1990s, the filmmaker’s grandfather traveled here more than thirty times as a shuttle trader, recording his journeys on VHS. Set against this archival footage, the present-day city appears as a space shaped by trade, staged symbols of Sino-Russian friendship, and shifting forms of movement and exchange.
